Tuesday, Oct. 17th

Each group presented on their sonnets today.  Pay especial attention to Shakespeare’s Sonnets 29,116 and 130.

We looked at some examples of “pop sonnets,”  popular song lyrics turned into sonnets.  In groups of three, choose a popular song, look up the lyrics, and turn them into a SONNET.  You may want to work on this through a google doc.  Each group will hand in ONE sonnet on Wednesday, Oct. 25th.

We will be starting Hamlet on Thursday.  Please bring the “colouring sheet” with you.

Friday, Oct. 13th

The remaining souvenirs were shown and tales told before we finished off the introduction to the Renaissance and launched into sonnets.

We read and discussed Sir Thomas Wyatt’s “Whoso Lists to Hunt” (150), and then in groups of three, we were assigned a sonnet to study.  Next class, each group will read the sonnet to us, explain what it is about, and comment on the literary features (10 marks collectively).

Please bring the “colouring” page with you as we will be using the back of that hand-out.

Wednesday, Oct. 4th

We wrote the quiz on Chaucer’s Prologue to The Canterbury Tales today.  When we finished, we read and discussed the ballads, “Bonny Barbara Allan” (108) and “Get Up and Bar the Door” (109), which brings us to the end of the Medieval Period.  We are currently watching an episode of Blackadder and noting anything we recognize and learned from our Medieval unit. We shall finish this on Friday.

Please bring your HAMLET LETTERS to class.

Monday, Oct. 2nd

We finished off “The Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales today, so our quiz will take place on Wednesday.  You will need to recognize the pilgrims based on the quotations, and to identify what class they belong to, such as urban, feudal, or ecclessiastical.

We are in the middle of “The Pardoner’s Tale” (81) and will finish it next class as well.

Start working on your creative project on Chaucer.  The details can be found on the post on Sept. 28th.    This is due on Oct. 10th.

Please bring your HAMLET LETTERS to class.

Thursday, Sept. 28th

We continued reading and discussing “The Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales, getting up to the Miller.  We are currently listening to “The Miller’s Tale,” as told by Baba Brinkman.  We shall finish “The Prologue” on Monday, and write the quiz on the pilgrims on Wednesday, Oct. 4th.

On Oct. 6th, we will be writing a SHORT COMPOSITION on Chaucer in class.

You can start working on your CREATIVE ASSIGNMENT, which is due on Oct. 10th. Your options are:

  1.  MAKE a “medieval” relic that “you acquired from one of the pilgrims,” and do a “show and tell” on Oct. 10th, telling us the tale of how you came into possession of the object.

OR

2.  WRITE a modern day description of a 21st century “pilgrim” ( a TYPE of person you would find in our society just as Chaucer wrote about types of people he found in his society).  This will be written in modern English, but it must be in HEROIC COUPLETS (20 lines).  You will NOT have to present this.  Just hand it in for marking.

Your “Hamlet letters” are due next week.
