Thursday, April 19th

Today we met John Keats and discussed his poems “When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be” and “Ode to a Nightingale,” which we are not quite finished with yet.  We will be concluding the ROMANTICS next class, which means that the ROMANTICS REVIEW TEST is coming up quickly.  It will likely be on Monday, April 30th.  This time, the test will be exclusively on the Romantic Period writers.

Friday, April 13th

After finishing “Kubla Khan,” we did an introduction to Byron and Shelley, and we read Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty” (529) and “Apostrophe to the Ocean” (531), with a short excerpt from Don Juan (534).

We will carry on with the Romantics next class.

Wednesday, April 11th

We finished discussing the conclusion of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and then we read and discussed Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan” (513).  The poem warns of the influence of artists, so please bring an example of art / pop culture that has influenced social values, perspectives, politics, and/ or behaviour in society.

Monday, April 9th

We continued reading and discussing Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and are almost finished (511).  We shall carry on with this poem and one more from Coleridge next class.

Thursday, April 4th

We continued our study of Wordsworth with his “Lines Written A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey” (475) and “The World is Too Much With Us” (488).

Then we started Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (493).  We will continue from page 494 next class.

Tuesday, April 3rd

The Restoration Period Review test was returned today.  We then did a brief introduction to the Romantic Period, focusing on William Wordsworth (and Samuel Taylor Coleridge) and their Lyrical Ballads.  We read and discussed “My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold” (485) and “Ode: Intimations on Immortality.”  We will continue with Wordsworth next class.

Thursday, March 15th

We wrote the test covering everything from the Anglo-Saxon Period to the end of the Restoration Period.  Then, we watched a clip from a documentary on William Blake and launched into a discussion on what constitutes Literature.  We shall continue this discussion after Spring Break.

Tuesday, March 13th

We read and discussed William Blake’s “The Lamb” (444), “The Tiger” (446), “The Chimney Sweep”(445), “The Poison Tree” (448), “Jerusalem,” “Holy Thursday” and “London.”

We then did some review for the test on Thursday that covers everything from Beowulf to Blake.

Those who are thinking of skipping the test tomorrow should be warned that the make up test will be significantly less pleasant.
The drawings on Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” were collected.
