Thursday, Sept. 21st

We started Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (59) today, getting as far as the Nun. We are taking notes on the pilgrims in terms of their appearance, skills, traits, and whether or not Chaucer satirizes them.  There will be a quiz on the pilgrims in the future.

Wednesday, Sept. 13th

After finishing “The Burning of Beowulf’s Body,” we watched a video from S.F.U. on the origins of English and Beowulf. We noted FOUR salient points garnered from the video on Beowulf and handed that in with the kennings and caesuras you found for homework.  This was handed in at the end of class. We also talked about other types of writing and the achievements of the Anglo-Saxons.

We will be moving on to the MEDIEVAL PERIOD on Friday.

Monday, Sept. 11th

After reviewing what we’ve learned about the Anglo-Saxons, we started reading and discussing the excerpts from Beowulf in our text.  To show me that you understand what kennings and caesuras are, please write out THREE examples of each from the section on “The Battle with Grendel” (23-26) to be collected on Wednesday.

We will finish off Beowulf next class.

It was a pleasure meeting you all today!  Your “Game of Thrones” introductions gave me a good glimpse of who you are.  I can tell that we are going to have a great year together.

We started an introduction to the ANGLO-SAXON PERIOD  with an excerpt from “The Battle of Maldon.”  We shall continue on our introduction next class.  Please bring your text book with you.
