We looked at some of Sir Christopher Wren’s work in rebuilding London after the fire of 1666.  Then we started watching and discussing Dangerous Liasons in terms of its depiction of the life of the “Great” and the”Rich”.  We are noting how they fall short of the ideals of the Augustan Age, and observing the role of women in the Restoration Period.  This is all background information for the works in the Age of Pope.

We shall continue with the film and Alexander Pope next class.

Friday, Jan. 27th

We continued with the RESTORATION PERIOD after going over the test.

We read and discussed Lady Mary Chudleigh’s “To the Ladies” (355), and Samuel Pepys’ Diary (359).  We didn’t quite finish the passage on the fire of London, so please read the rest of the diary entry.

Wednesday, Jan. 25th

We continued with the introduction to the Restoration Period today.

Each of you ended up in one of the seven levels of society.  On Feb. 10th, you will be going to the computer to lab to photoshop a picture of you (your alter-ego) living in Restoration England, along with a blurb about your life.  You may use a quotation from a Restoration writer or write a verse yourself.

We will be using the textbook next class.

The TEST has been moved to Monday, Jan. 23rd because there is an earthquake drill next class.

We will do the “art auction” and introduction to the RESTORATION PERIOD next class instead.   Be prepared to talk about your sculpture.  This includes reading the passage that has inspired your art and commenting on the epic features.

We sculpted Paradise Lost today.  More will be done with the sculptures in a future class…

Start studying for the RENAISSANCE REVIEW TEST scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19th.  We will be doing a review in class on Tuesday, but it would help if you started to review on your own.

We discussed the excerpt from Paradise Lost  today.  We shall continue with Milton on Friday, followed by a REVIEW and then the RENAISSANCE REVIEW TEST ( likely on Thursday, Jan. 19th or Monday, Jan. 23rd…depending on how fast we get through the rest of Milton).

We read and discussed John Milton’s “On His Blindness” (303), and started Paradise Lost.  Please read the entire excerpt in the text and be prepared to discuss it next class. Identify the EPIC QUALITIES of a catalogue of heroes, invocation to the muse, epic similes, a great battle, in medias res, inversion, elevated language…

We entered the PURITAN AGE today through a couple of videos, discussion, and Andrew Marvell’s poem “To His Coy Mistress” (276).  Next class, we shall meet John Milton.

It is a good time to start studying for the RENAISSANCE REVIEW TEST, which will likely take place on Tuesday,Jan. 17th.
