Monday, Feb. 19th

We finished reading and discussing “A Modest Proposal” and the clip from Monty Python today before we did an introduction to Gulliver’s Travels.  Everyone was assigned to half a chapter from “The Voyage to Liliput” and “The Voyage to Brobdinag.”  You will SUMMARIZE what you have read, identify the SATIRE TECHNIQUES, and if you can,  connect them to the flaws, vices, problems that Swift is point out through the novel (20 marks).

If you were absent, you can see me for a book and your section of the novel.

We chose portraits and took selfies in preparation for the “Portrait and Octave” assignment due Feb. 27th.  Once again, if you were absent, please see me about this.

Wednesday, Feb. 14th

We went over some HUMOUR TECHNIQUES, and an introduction to Jonathan Swift.  Then we started reading and discussing “A Modest Proposal” (382).  We will finish this next class, focusing on identifying the humorous elements and what they satirize.

Friday, Feb. 9th

We read and discussed Alexander Pope’s epigrams (412), and Canto III and V of The Rape of the Lock (402) today.  Please note the heroic couplets and style as you will be writing an octave to accompany your “portrait” at the end of the unit.

Next class, we will be reading Jonathan Swift.

We talked about the role of women in the Restoration Period, and read and discussed Lady Mary Chudleigh’s “To the Ladies” (355).  We are now in the midst of watching and discussing Dangerous Liasons to get a better idea of what life was life for the upper crust.  Please bring your text to class as we will be referring to it.

Friday, Jan. 26th

We finished our “art auction, ” and based on the returns on the art investments, sorted ourselves into the seven classes listed on page 333.  Do note which class you belong to as we will be doing an assignment on this later in the unit.

We were introduced to the various monarchs and their lives, and shall continue this with the use of the text and the film Dangerous Liasons next class.

Wednesday, Jan. 24th

We introduced the RESTORATION PERIOD with a Coffee House and Art Auction.  If you weren’t here, you missed out on LIT BROWNIES and coffee!

Each artist talked about their sculpture (marked /20 based on how well the sculpture reflected the DETAILS from Milton’s passage), and then we had an auction for the piece.  We are collecting art both for its beauty and as an investment.  We shall finish this on Friday. Please bring your textbook with you.
