We got a sense of who William Blake was through his artwork, and then through his poetry.  We read and discussed “The Lamb” (444), “The Tiger” (446), “The Chimney Sweep,” “The Poison Tree,” “London,” and “Jerusalem.”

We will do a review of the Restoration Period and beyond when we get back from Spring Break.  Your test will take place on Thursday, March 30th.

Wednesday, March 8th

We finished discussing Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” (433), and watching the Blackadder episode on Samuel Johnson today.

Next class, we will be reading and discussing the poetry of William Blake, which takes us to the end of the Restoration Period.

On the first day back from Spring Break, we will do a review.

Your next REVIEW TEST will take place on Thursday, March 30th (after Spring Break).

Monday, March 6th

We celebrated Robbie Burns Day today with haggis and poetry!  The main poem you are responsible for knowing is “To A Mouse” (440).

Next class, we will finish discussing Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” (433).

We wrote the Satire Assignment  in class today:

  1. a one page mock epic
  2. a 500 word “modest proposal”
  3. a 500 word allegory, in the vein of Gulliver’s Travels

OR  you may write an essay on the satire of the Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift in terms of their targets of satire and the literary / humour techniques they employ.

I’ve come down with the flu, so we will have to postpone the Burns Day Celebration to Monday.  You will need your text book for what is planned instead.

Friday, Feb. 24th

We finished discussing Jonathan Swift’s Gullivers Travels today, covering chapters 5-8 of “The Voyage to Brobdinag.”

The Satire Assignment will be written in class on Tuesday, Feb. 28th. You can start brainstorming and preparing to satirize a current event or situation(as we discussed in class) in the form of:

  1. a one page mock epic
  2. a 500 word “modest proposal”
  3. a 500 word allegory, in the vein of Gulliver’s Travels

On Thursday, March 2nd, we shall be celebrating BURNS DAY, so please pick a quatrain from a  Robert Burns poem to read that day.

We did a brief introduction to Samuel Johnson, and an excerpt from his dictionary (420).  Everyone listed their favourite word.  In the comment section below, type in your entry to the JOHNSON DICTION for your word in the format that Johnson used. Write the definition in YOUR OWN WORDS, and include a literary quotation using that word.

We continued discussing Jonathan Swift’s Gullivers Travels today, covering chapters 5-8 of “The Voyage to Liliput” and chapters 1-4 of “The Voyage to Brobdinag.”  We will finish off the last four chapters on Friday.

Monday, Feb. 21st

After finishing Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal,  we started discussing sections of his Gulliver’s Travels.  We will continue with chapter 5-6 of “The Voyage to Liliput” followed by “The Voyage to Brobdinag” next class.  Each of you is responsible for reading the chapter you signed up for and reporting back to the class about  your chapter.

After looking at your amazing Restoration Portraits, we read and discussed most of Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal.  We shall finish it next class.
