We read and discussed Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach” (650) and Thomas Hardy’s “The Darkling Thrush” (653).  We also looked at some quotations from Oscar Wilde in preparation for his play which we will start on June 1st.

We will be going to the play in Mr. Wallace’s drama studio on May 24th, so we will only have May 26th to complete the vidding project. Please download all the scenes you want to use BEFORE Friday’s class.  If you would like me to “film” any scenes for you, send me an email with the selected scenes by Saturday, May 20th 8 p.m..

Tuesday, May 16th

We finished watching and discussing Jane Eyre today.  Next class, I’ll go over the “vidding” project before moving on to Thomas Hardy and Matthew Arnold.

We will be going to the play in Mr. Wallace’s drama studio on May 24th, so we will only have May 26th to complete the vidding project.

Friday, May 12th

We started watching Jane Eyre today, making note of how it:

  • is a .prototypical feminist novel…
  • features a Byronic hero…
  • uses setting as a character…
  • has gothic horror features…
  • features the “mad woman in the attic” trope

We will be doing a creative assignment on this film

Wednesday, May 10th

We finished off our look at Robert Browning with “My Last Duchess”(640) and “Porphyria’s Lover.”  We then read and discussed Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” (hand-out…if you were absent, please come by to pick one up) and Emily Bronte’s “Song” (672).

Next class, we will looking into Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.

Monday, May 8th

We read and discussed Tennyson’s “Ulysses”(626), Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “Sonnet 43” (669), and Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” (640).  We will finish discuss and read a little more of Browning’s poetry before moving on to the “Emilys” next class.

We continued with our adventure into the Victorian Period with Alfred, Lord Tennyson.  We read and discussed “The Lady of Shalott” and are about to launch into “Ulysses” next class.

Tuesday, May 2nd

We had our VICTORIAN TEA PARTY today to introduce us to the Victorian Era.  We heard and discussed a couple of pieces from Rudyard Kipling, “The Elephant’s Child” and “The White Man’s Burden” and debated the pros and cons of colonization and imperialism and the Victorian conflict between prosperity and conscience.  We shall carry on with the Victorians next class.

Friday,April 28th

We wrote the ROMANTIC PERIOD TEST today.  If you missed it, talk to me about a make up date.

We are having a Victorian Tea Party on Tuesday.  Please bring a tea cup and saucer if you can. Memorize a key line from the poet you were assigned and try to work it into the conversation on Tuesday.

We did a review of the Romantic Period and beyond in preparation for the test on Friday, April 28th.

Please find 2-3 quotations from your assigned author for the Victorian Tea Party on Monday.

Friday, April 21st

We met John Keats today and read and discussed his poems:  “Bright Star” (559), “When I Have Fears That I Might Cease To Be” (559), “On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer” (558), “Ode to a Nightingale” (575) as read by Benedict Cumberbatch, and “Ode on a Grecian Urn” which we have not discussed yet.

We are now at the end of the Romantic Period, so we will do a review on Wednesday, April 26th and write the test on the Romantic Period on Friday, April 28th.

On May 2nd, we shall have our Victorian Tea Party. Bring your own tea cup and saucer if you can.
